Akita Breed Information

Akita Breed is a large, powerful and alert dog with much substance and heavy bone. Akita is originally developed to hunt bears in Japan, and now used as a guard dog and police dog by the Japanese.
AKC Breed Group: Working.
Breed Weight: 65 - 130 lbs, male is usually heavier.
Breed Height: male 26 - 28 inches, female 24 - 26 inches.

Color(s): any color including white, brindle and pinto.
Coat: Akitas are double-coated; straight and coarse hair, the undercoat is soft and dense.
Characteristics and temperaments: Akitas are alert, courageous and responsive. They usually are aggressive toward other dogs and cautious with strangers so proper socialization as a pup is a must. Akita breed dogs make good watch dog. They have to be raised around children, otherwise they may not tolerate their behavior.
Care: Moderate brushing should be enough for this breed of dog. The dog is shedding twice a year and proper grooming is especially necessary during these time.
Training and activity: Akitas want to be part of the family. They need a securely fenced yard for consistent exercise and training. Having a considerable stamina, but don't require long walks every day, although getting one should be good as with every dog.
