The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog breed is a tri-colord, powerful, sturdy and large dog. He prefers to be around his family all the time. This dog is willing to please and makes an excellent companion for the family and children. Obedient and calm are two strong characteristics of the dog.

Breed Weight: 85 - 140 lbs.

Breed Height: 23.5 - 28.5 inches.

Color(s): Black with rust and white markings. Rust usually present on legs between white and black.

Coat: Outercoat or topcoat is dense and straight while undercoat is thicker.

Characteristics and temperaments: The Greater Swiss Mountain dogs are friendly, intelligent, protective and reliable. They make good family dogs because of the socialization ability. Excels in obedient, this breed also gets along with children well. The GSMD is also a reliable watchdog.

Care: Regular grooming is sufficient.

Training and activity: This breed loves to work. He enjoys taking part in various dog sporting activities. Moderate exercise is enough though, although the dog can adapt too with the level of activity of his family members. Training should be done firmly and consistently because of his strong character. The dog might have to be trained about what is allowed and disallowed in the family.
