Herding Breeds was originally in the working breed group in AKC. Known as a great searcher and in many police work, this dog breed is highly trainable, even to provide service to handicapped owners.
Most herding dogs are medium to large in size, active, courageous and determined. This breed can work from dawn-to-dusk, helping farmers to herd the sheep.
The herding breeds are Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Bearded Collie, Belgian Malinois, Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren, Bouvier des Flandres, Briard, Collie, German Shepherd Dog, Old English Sheepdog, Puli, Shetland Sheepdog, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, and Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
Some of them are calmer but Border Collie, for example, is not only active but need to do something meaningful. A daily long walk is not enough. The owner has to keep it busy by playing throw and fetch, teach the dog to herd or climb. These things have to be carefully put into considerations when adopting a puppy.
Herding dogs like German Shepherd is prone to temperament problems due to overbreeding. Seek out a responsible breeders who are careful with their stock.
A remarkable feature of the herding group is the ability to control the movement of other animals, even many times of their size.
