Hound Breeds

achilles's picture

Hound breeds are friendly and accustomed to working in the field. Scent hounds are great critters to work with their handlers in the field while Sighthounds tend to work independently of the hunter.

Some hound breeds are aloof and rather tough to train. Their noses are always responding to the pungent world of odors far beyond humans. Scent hounds follow their noses any where, while Sighthounds gaze on the horizon in the search for game.

In the category of Scent hounds are Basset, Beagle, Black and Tan Coonhound, Bloodhound, Dachsunds, American and English Foxhounds, Harrier, Norwegian Elkhound, Otterhound and Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen.

Sighounds tend to be elegance and of grace with long legs, slender bodies and long noses. They are Afghan Hond, Basenji, Borzoi, Greyhound, Irish Wolfhound, Ibizan Hound, Pharaoh Hound, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Saluki, Scottish Deerhound and Whippet.

Because hound breeds tend to require a lot of exercise, make sure you will be able to satisfy this if you are going to adopt one. Some hound dogs are hard to train because of their natural sense of adventure.
