Norwegian Elkhound Breed Information

The Norwegian Elkhound breed is a medium size, squarely built, hardy, sturdy and great stamina dog. They are fearless, friendly but somewhat reserved with strangers. The dogs are affectionate, reliable and make great companions for children.

Breed Height: 18 - 21 inches.

Color(s): shades of gray.
Coat: double-coated; outercoat is thick, hard, smooth. Undercoat is coarse and straight.
Characteristics and temperaments: The Norwegian Elkhound breed is brave, affectionate and loyal dog. These dogs should not be trusted with other non-canine pets, although they usually are reliable with children. They also usually has the mind of their own. The dogs may be aggressive with the same sex dogs.
Care: The coarse and hard coat is easy to groom. Regularly brush the coat. Pay special attention especially during heavy shedding.
Training and activity: This breed may be a bit resistant to obedience training. These dogs have their own mind and frequently show their independence. Being firm and gentle in training are the keys to successfully training this breed. The Norwegian Elkhounds are very energetic and require ample of exercise regularly. They may follow their own nose when picking up interesting scents.
