The Shetland Sheepdog breed is a strong, lightly built, beautiful, small and alert dog. They can adapt to both city and country life. Indoors, they are fairly inactive but should be sufficiently exercised. This breed is smart, pleasing and loyal to its family. The Sheltie is a good guard and watchdog that requires proper socialization as a puppy.

Shetland Sheepdog Breed

Color(s): black, blue merle, sable with white and/or tan markings.

Coat: double-coated; the undercoat is short and soft while the outercoat is long and wiry.

Characteristics and temperaments: The Shetland Sheepdog is a great companion dog with gentle, sensitive, loyal, intelligent and trainable temperaments. They are loving and affectionate, but suspicious with strangers. They also can get along well with older and more considerate children. Having a strong herding instinct, they love to chase things.

Care: The long coat is easy to care. Regular brushing is important. Bathe only when necessary. This breed sheds its undercoat twice a year.

Training and activity: These dogs need a lot of exercise, although they can adapt moderately to the activity level of their family. They enjoy outdoor activities and sports. This breed needs companionship and should be socialize extensively as a puppy. Never let this dog unleashed in unsafe area, as he may choose to chase cars.
